Whispers Behind the Battle Line
Director: Ashkan Kheilnejad
Playwright: Alireza Naderi
Project Description
Whispers Behind the Battle Line premiered in 1995 at the International Iranian Universities Theatre Festival (IIUTF) under the direction of Alireza Naderi. Its candid and unconventional portrayal of the Iran–Iraq War led to its immediate ban, and the Molavi Theatre, along with the festival, was closed for a year under pressure from paramilitary forces.
Set in a small military barracks, the play follows eight soldiers with conflicting beliefs and ideologies. During Ramadan—a holy month traditionally associated with peace—they engage in conversations about the war, the Iranian Revolution, and the complex realities of the Middle East. As the month ends, conflict resurfaces, revealing how fragile peace truly is. By the play’s conclusion, all the soldiers have perished, leaving only a haunting photograph as a testament to their presence.
Director’s Note
How can we evoke a memory we have never lived?
The cast and I, born after the Iran-Iraq War, encounter this conflict only through sanctified iconography shaped by official narratives and propaganda. This awareness guided our approach to this piece: we sought to strip the performance of conventional war imagery. The front lines were reimagined not as grim battlefields, but as spaces of unexpected joy—like a park. By choosing an empty stage with no set or props, we allowed the actors’ bodies to shape the environment, creating human, relatable relationships while removing the heroic or sacred imagery typically tied to war.
The result is a living performance of vibrant bodies celebrating life, untethered from war or death. In dialogue with Naderi’s text, the play becomes a contemporary anti-war work, revealing the fragility of memory, the complexity of human relationships, and the possibility of imagining peace.
